Engine Care

Proper engine maintenance is critical for reliable operation.

  1. Oil Change: Run engine briefly to warm oil. Drain via drain plug, refill with SAE 30 (48 oz).
  2. Air Filter: Replace paper filter every 50 hours; clean foam pre-filter if equipped.
  3. Spark Plug: Gap at 0.030 inches; replace annually or every 100 hours.
  4. Fuel System: Use fuel stabilizer if storing over 30 days. Replace fuel filter annually.

WARNING! Never check or add oil while engine is running. Allow to cool first.

Blade Care & Sharpening

Sharp blades ensure a clean cut and reduce strain on engine.

  1. Disconnect spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
  2. Raise deck to highest setting, block securely.
  3. Remove blade bolt (turn counterclockwise) using a block of wood to prevent blade rotation.
  4. Sharpen blade evenly with a file or grinder, maintaining original angle. Balance blade.
  5. Reinstall blade with cutting edge toward ground, torque bolt to 45-50 ft-lbs.

CAUTION! Wear heavy gloves. Replace blades if cracked, bent, or excessively worn.

Storage & Winterization

Proper storage prevents fuel system issues and corrosion.

  1. Add fuel stabilizer to tank, run engine for 5 minutes to circulate.
  2. Change engine oil and filter.
  3. Remove spark plug, add 1 tablespoon of oil into cylinder, pull starter cord slowly to coat, reinstall plug.
  4. Clean entire mower, especially under deck. Apply light oil to exposed metal parts.
  5. Store in a dry, covered area. Inflate tires to max pressure to prevent flat spots.
  6. Disconnect battery negative terminal if storing longer than 30 days.

Tip: Consider using a breathable cover to protect from dust.
