Pre-Operation Checklist

Inspect the engine and equipment before each use to ensure safe and efficient operation.

  1. Check Oil Level: Ensure oil is at the full mark on the dipstick. Add if necessary.
  2. Check Fuel Level: Fill tank with fresh, clean unleaded gasoline. Do not overfill.
  3. Inspect Air Filter: Clean or replace if dirty or clogged.
  4. Check for Leaks: Look for fuel or oil leaks around the engine.
  5. Inspect Equipment: Ensure all attachments (blades, belts, etc.) are secure and undamaged.
  6. Clear Area: Remove debris, rocks, and obstacles from the operating area.

CAUTION! Never operate the engine without proper oil level. This can cause severe engine damage.

Starting & Stopping Procedures

Follow these steps to safely start and stop your Craftsman engine.

Starting a Cold Engine:

  1. Move the equipment to a well-ventilated, outdoor area.
  2. Set the equipment's drive control to "NEUTRAL" or "PARK".
  3. Move the throttle control to the "CHOKE" or "FAST" position.
  4. If equipped, turn the fuel valve to the "ON" position.
  5. Pull the recoil starter handle slowly until resistance is felt, then pull briskly.
  6. Once the engine starts, gradually move the choke to the "RUN" position.

Stopping the Engine:

  1. Move the throttle control to the "SLOW" or "IDLE" position.
  2. Let the engine run at idle for 30 seconds to cool down.
  3. Turn the ignition key to "OFF" or push the stop switch.
  4. If equipped, turn the fuel valve to the "OFF" position.

Tip: For a warm engine, starting usually does not require the choke.

Operating Instructions

Operate the engine and attached equipment according to these guidelines for best performance.

WARNING! Keep hands and feet away from moving parts. Never leave the engine unattended while running.

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance is crucial for engine reliability. Refer to the table below.

Maintenance TaskBefore Each UseEvery 25 HoursEvery 50 HoursEvery 100 Hours/Season
Check Oil Level
Check Air FilterClean/Replace
Change Engine Oil✓ (First 5 hrs)
Replace Spark Plug
Clean Cooling Fins
Check/Adjust Valve Clearance*
Inspect Fuel Lines & Filter

*Refer to a qualified service technician for valve adjustment.

Fuel & Oil Recommendations

Using the correct fluids is essential for engine performance and lifespan.

Fuel:

Oil:

CAUTION! Gasoline is extremely flammable. Store in an approved container away from heat and sparks.

Storage Procedures

Proper storage prevents fuel system problems and corrosion.

  1. Fuel System Preparation:
    • Option A (Short-term): Add fuel stabilizer to a full tank and run the engine for 5 minutes.
    • Option B (Long-term): Run the engine until it stops from fuel starvation. This empties the carburetor.
  2. Change Oil: Change the engine oil while it is warm (see Maintenance Schedule).
  3. Clean Engine: Allow the engine to cool. Clean exterior with a dry cloth. Remove grass and debris from cooling fins.
  4. Remove Spark Plug: Remove the spark plug, add 1 tablespoon of oil into the cylinder, pull the starter rope slowly to distribute oil, then reinstall the plug.
  5. Battery (if equipped): Disconnect and store in a cool, dry place. Charge periodically.
  6. Storage Location: Store the engine in a clean, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources.

Troubleshooting Guide

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine will not start1. Empty fuel tank.
2. Choke not set properly.
3. Dirty air filter.
4. Fouled spark plug.
5. Old or bad gasoline.
1. Add fresh fuel.
2. Set choke for cold start.
3. Clean or replace air filter.
4. Clean, gap, or replace spark plug.
5. Drain and replace with fresh fuel.
Engine starts then dies1. Clogged fuel filter/cap vent.
2. Water in fuel.
3. Carburetor issues.
1. Check fuel lines, filter, and tank cap vent.
2. Drain fuel tank and carburetor.
3. Have carburetor serviced by a technician.
Engine lacks power1. Dirty air filter.
2. Overloaded engine.
3. Old oil.
4. Clogged cooling fins.
1. Clean or replace air filter.
2. Reduce load.
3. Change engine oil.
4. Clean debris from cooling fins.
Excessive vibration1. Loose mounting bolts.
2. Damaged blade or attachment.
3. Engine mounting pad worn.
1. Tighten all mounting bolts.
2. Inspect and replace damaged parts.
3. Inspect and replace if necessary.
Excessive smoke1. Blue smoke: Oil overfull/breather clogged.
2. Black smoke: Rich fuel mixture (dirty air filter).
3. White smoke: Water in fuel/combustion chamber (rare).
1. Check oil level, change if overfull. Clean breather.
2. Clean or replace air filter.
3. Drain fuel system, check for coolant leak (if liquid-cooled).

Reset: For engines with an oil alert system, the engine will not start if oil is low. Add oil to the proper level.
